Beach House - Carpinteria Oil Painting - 5x7

This one was so fun! I've been wanting to paint this house for a long time, it's just the perfect beach house :)

Field Somehow Flowing - Plein Air Palette Knife Painting - 6x6

I wanted to try a plein air palette knife painting.  I think this was a good first go, but I'll have to give it another try sometime.

Sunset at the Bluffs - Carpinteria Plein Air Painting - 5x7

You know what moves faster than me? The sun. Sunset scenes seem much harder than those at sunrise because not only does the light change, it disappears completely!

La Arcada II - Santa Barbara Oil Painting - 6x6

I decided to take another shot at this charming courtyard in Santa Barbara.  I experimented with one of my very dark panels again, it switches up my way of thinking about the painting, so I think it's helpful.

Sunset Clouds - 6x6

The flu has seriously kicked my butt for the last few days, I can't remember the last time I felt this sick.  The tylenol kicked in so I crawled up to my studio to make this quick post....will definitely not be painting today, but here's one I did last week:

Corner House Carpinteria - 6x6

One of the best things about living in a little beach town is all the brightly colored houses around :) If I owned a house here I would have such a hard time deciding on what color it should be!

Field Work - Plein Air Oil Painting - 6x6

I'm getting a little more used to this whole plein air thing, there are parts of it that I love and parts that I could do without....like people warning me that I'll probably have ticks on me from standing in the grass. I'm thankful for the warning, but then my ankles itched for the rest of the painting because I was sure there were ticks on me! I couldn't find any.

I was happy with how this painting turned out, it wasn't super bright like yesterday's, but it also wasn't dull like I was afraid it would be.

Green Field - Plein Air Oil Painting - 6x9

I was SO happy to finally paint on a sunny day! I felt like my other plein air pieces looked a lot brighter and a lot more colorful (even for a cloudy day) when they were outside with me, and when I brought them inside they were so drab!

I was determined that this painting would not be drab! And the result was very bright! I was also experimenting with some new colors I ordered.  I don't know how I ever painted without "purple lake" :)

Cloudy Day and Tree Abstraction - 6x6

Last week I went out on several short plein air outings.  I hate painting on cloudy days but I went anyway....

I brought two panels with me, so I decided to have fun with the second one.  There were trees to my left that had this amazing light that kept peeking through briefly while I was painting the first one.  I knew I only had like a minute to try to capture the colors that were happening.  Here's the result, which I actually really like, even more than the first painting that I spent much longer working on:

Hearst Castle Indoor Pool - 6x6

I think this will be the last in this series.  This pool was ridiculous! The floor was covered with gold tiles! That would be one crazy swim.

In other news, all the proceeds from the "Sale" items in my shop now go directly to World Vision International.  Now my etsy clients can help me help others :) I'm going to try to always have at least 3 sale items to choose from.  You can check out the sale here

Hearst Castle Theatre - 6x6

Definitely my favorite in the series so far.  I started with a very dark colored painting surface for this one, it ended up making things a lot easier and a lot faster. I'm excited to keep experimenting...

Hearst Castle Interior II - 6x6

Second in the series, I liked that this one included the source of that interesting blue light.

Hearst Castle Interior - 6x6

I'm working on a series of these interior scenes.  I've always been attracted to this type of subject, but I don't always have a chance to paint them. A trip to the castle was a perfect solution! I liked this scene because of the orange glow coming from the light in the room, and the cool blue light from outside being reflected on the furniture.

Butterfly Grove - 6x6

Zach and I went to Pismo beach and up to Hearst Castle for our New Years weekend getaway.  We stopped at the butterfly grove...I heard it was amazing.  We came prepared with binoculars, but I think we only saw like 20 butterflies! Disappointing! Luckily we had lots of other things to do. And the light while we were there was just gorgeous.

White House - 6x6

This little house was just too quaint, and the light was hitting it just right.  White houses are my favorite to paint.

The Bluffs - 8x16

I really like how this painting turned out, even though I was painting on canvas which I usually hate :) One day I'll get these bluff trees right, they're still not exactly how I want them.  Much closer than my first attempts though :)

That Tree - California Landscape - 6x6

Everyone in Carp know exactly where this tree is.  I've painted it many times before, but the light on it was especially good this day, so here it is again.

La Jolla Beach II - California Landscape - 8x10

I wasn't sure how this one would turn out, but I really like the orange and blue colors together.  I didn't pick a new years resolution, but I think I would like to be a little more daring in my painting.

Poles - Carpinteria Landscape Painting - 6x12

I had the busiest day yesterday! I can't even believe how much I got done :) I slept SO well last night.

I chose to paint this little scene because I liked the shadows, sunset shadows are the best.  And I liked the the dark telephone poles against the light colored sky.

San Diego Night Scene - 6x6

I like painting night scenes every once in a while, I think I'll try to do more and hopefully get better at it.  The extreme lights and darks are surprisingly difficult to paint in one shot.
