On the Hunt - 4x4

I've been having fun with these tiny 4x4 inch canvases lately.  I thought they would make nice items at the upcoming holiday boutiques I'm participating in.

Early Light - 6x6

The sun was trying to break through the fog on this particular morning at East Beach.  The light on this little bridge got me excited.

In Step - 8x10

I switched up my color palette for this painting.  I took out certain colors that I deemed as "shortcuts" (Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Yellow Ochre) or ones that I was just using too much of (Sap Green) and I added a few that have been neglected in my paint drawers for months, such as Quinacridone Rose and Cadmium Green Pale.  I also spent more time working the shadows before adding any of the light parts, since it's the shadows that really make the light shine, and I feel like maybe I've been rushing through them.  Overall I'm happy with the piece, but I was also happy while I was painting it.  I sometimes forget how refreshing it is to mix things up a bit.

Santa Barbara Street - 6x12

I love when paintings are easy to name.  And Santa Barbara St. is always my chosen route, way better than Garden or Laguna.

Round Pears - 5x5

My favorite types of pears to paint are the ones with great angles and curves...well Trader Joes didn't have any of those, just these round fat ones.  Good news is that they taste just as good :)

Tangerine Trio - 6x6

Studio cat stole one of my giant art erasers this morning, and he's been playing fetch with it for about an hour now.  He looks pretty ridiculous carrying it around in his mouth.

I think this is my favorite of the all the tangerine still lifes I've done, maybe it's just that I love orange and blue together.

Avocado Accordion - 5x7

Sorry to everyone who received a duplicate email this morning.  I really don't know why that happened, I was adjusting the photos on some of my older posts, but I don't know why that would cause it to send twice.  Hopefully it's fixed now.

This week and I are just not getting along! Which is why I'm posting this at midnight! Ok time to sleep...

Santa Barbara Harbor XXIV - 8x16

I couldn't resist that orange colored walkway next to the gorgeous blue water.  It's that color blue that I just want to paint forever :)

Leadbetter Cliff - 12x12

A little vacation was exactly what I needed! Now I'm ready to get back to work.  Maybe I'll post some trip photos later, but for now here's a view of one of my new favorite seaside cliffs. I walked pretty far out in the water to get this shot, my dress was not so dry afterwards, next time I'll remember a swimsuit.

Birds on a Roof - 6x18

I found these very fun long panels, I think I'll do a couple of beach scenes on them next.  But first I just had to paint these guys strutting on this rooftop.

Jet Boat Commission - 6x6

I've had a lot of harbor scenes commissioned recently.  Which is just fine with me! It's one of my favorite subjects to paint.  And since I was hanging out on boats and what not yesterday I finally got to make use of my anchor shoes :)

Eureka South Dakota II - Small Town Oil Painting - 6x12

It's been such a busy (and exciting) week.  Which explains why my postings have been a bit irregular.  With meetings and interviews and a new show going up I've gotten a little behind in actually photographing what I've been working on.  Hopefully I'll get back on track soon.  I'll have to! I just found out this week that I'll be having a solo exhibit at a gallery on State St. at the end of October (so much for relaxing a bit after a busy summer!).

And the opening reception for my current show is tomorrow (Saturday, August 27) from 6-8 pm.  Please stop by if you can! I'd love to see you! Click here for more information about it.

Eureka South Dakota - Landscape Oil Painting - 8x16

I've been meaning to paint this for a long time, over a year! And I really enjoyed the different subject matter, it was especially fun to paint that large blue sky.

Shadows in Front - 6x6

Couldn't resist this, I loved how these guys were lit from behind with their shadows falling in front of them.  I didn't even care that they were so confused at why I was snapping photos in their direction.

Cabrillo Palms II - 6x6

I had another go at this scene on my normal painting surface...a much different outcome.

In other news, I dropped off my paintings at the Palm Loft Gallery today! The opening reception is this Saturday (August 27, 2011) 6:00-8:00 pm, I'd love to see you there!  Click here for more info.

Cabrillo Palms - 6x12

I decided to try out these linen panels.  They're smoother than canvas panels, but have more texture than my usual gessobord panel (they're also more expensive).  I haven't decided if I like it or not yet, I'll need to paint a few more and see what happens.
