Bluffs Path, Sunset - 8x10

It's been a while since my last post! I took a long break for Christmas and New Years, very refreshing :) But now it's back to work, there's so much to do, including a very large commission (the panel of which is currently staring at me, trying to intimidate me with its size!) 

I painted this piece long before Christmas but neglected to post it until now. I love the bluffs at sunset, all these wonderful purple blue shadows appear cooling off all the yellows and oranges that are usually present.

Santa Barbara Early Morning - 8x16

Crazy busy (but fun!) weekend.  It was our 5 year class reunion at Westmont, we had such a good turnout, I almost forgot how much I missed that place.  Although I'm very jealous of their new painting studio,  in the open air, and I'm pretty sure it had an ocean view, I would love to paint there for a day.  

I'm very happy with how today's painting turned out, definitely one of my new favorites, sunrise is such an inspiring time.

I was walking down Linden one evening and the sun was finally hitting this building just perfectly, it's such a fun yellow color, I've been waiting to paint it for a while.

Somewhere San Diego - Landscape Oil Painting - 6x6

Usually around this time of year I start getting really crafty.  Scrapbooking, crocheting, baking, etc.  I make lists and brainstorm ideas of homemade gifts I can start making for Christmas. 

 Not so much this year.  Ever since I started on this full time painting gig I've been far less crafty in other areas.  I think all my creative energy is just used up everyday....or else I've just become really lazy! I hope not! Maybe it's because the nearest craft store is 40 minutes away....or because crochet patterns are written in another language, one that I just don't care enough about to master. 

I think I'll stick to painting.  My holiday "crafts" will just be different than the usual.  Maybe I'll break out the watercolors.  

But there will still be baking :)

I really like how this painting of the Carpinteria Salt Marsh turned out. I love how every time I look at the marsh there's different colors peeking out, it makes it fun to paint again and again.

Here's a shot of my new studio! I painted there today :) There's an amazing breeze that comes through that window, so I'll never get lightheaded from paint fumes again. It's the best room I could ever ask for :)

In Between - California Beach Landscape Painting - 5x7

The sun was out long enough for me to grab this :) It's another view from the Carpinteria campgrounds. I really enjoy painting the reflections that this little estuary gives.

Something's In The Air - California Landscape Oil Painting - 6x6

I painted this one rather quickly, and that's usually a recipe for disaster, but I'm happy with how it turned out. I think I'm liking all my paintings of sunset better than the ones at dawn, they just feel warmer...which is usually something my color palette lacks, since I favor green and blue so much.

There's a certain part of my new neighborhood that really reminds me of the Dharma houses in Lost...I thinks it's because they're all painted in pastel colors or bright yellow. I feel like I should look out for polar bears when I walk through it.

The last few days of painting have been terribly frustrating. I was on a good streak for awhile, for five days in a row I loved everything I made. Now, nothing, everything looks horrible to me. Luckily I've learned that these things go in cycles, I just have to keep at it.

Tall and Slender - Carpinteria Palm Trees - 6x12

I made trip into Santa Barbara yesterday, camera in hand, looking for new things to paint. I think I only got three good shots the whole time I was there. I have much more luck in Carpinteria, maybe because it's less crowded, and there are more open spaces (that's why I love it). This painting is of one such space.

I saw this trio of lifeguard towers on my jog yesterday morning. I got so excited because they were such bright colors, and the sun was shining on them in such a perfect way. I knew they would end up being today's painting :)

Seven AM - Carpinteria Landscape Oil Painting - 12x12

I painted this from a photo I took on my jog yesterday morning. It was my first day painting on a larger surface, I didn't think it would be that different until I realized that it's actually 4 times the size of my normal paintings. It made me nervous but I really liked how it turned out.
