That Bluff Tree - 6x6

My interview for the SB News Press is today,  I think it might be a challenge since I'm not really great at explaining my art....which is why my posts are always so short, I don't think it needs much explanation! like today's painting, this is a tree, I liked it's shape so I painted it :)

Field Work - Plein Air Oil Painting - 6x6

I'm getting a little more used to this whole plein air thing, there are parts of it that I love and parts that I could do without....like people warning me that I'll probably have ticks on me from standing in the grass. I'm thankful for the warning, but then my ankles itched for the rest of the painting because I was sure there were ticks on me! I couldn't find any.

I was happy with how this painting turned out, it wasn't super bright like yesterday's, but it also wasn't dull like I was afraid it would be.

Green Field - Plein Air Oil Painting - 6x9

I was SO happy to finally paint on a sunny day! I felt like my other plein air pieces looked a lot brighter and a lot more colorful (even for a cloudy day) when they were outside with me, and when I brought them inside they were so drab!

I was determined that this painting would not be drab! And the result was very bright! I was also experimenting with some new colors I ordered.  I don't know how I ever painted without "purple lake" :)

The Bluffs - 8x16

I really like how this painting turned out, even though I was painting on canvas which I usually hate :) One day I'll get these bluff trees right, they're still not exactly how I want them.  Much closer than my first attempts though :)

That Tree - California Landscape - 6x6

Everyone in Carp know exactly where this tree is.  I've painted it many times before, but the light on it was especially good this day, so here it is again.

Presents!

Lots of family and friends requested paintings as gifts this year.   I guess that saves me money, but it's hard to know what to paint for them.  Hopefully I did an ok job :)  And now that Christmas is over I can post them here!

Bluff Tree at Sunrise - 6x6

It's been raining here since Friday, pretty much nonstop, our back patio is a kind of a pond now.  I love the rain, but now it's getting in the way, I have several new paintings that I need to photograph, definitely can't do that when it's pouring!

I love this little painting though, did it back when the sun existed :) I'll be working on a larger version of it today.

Carpinteria Avenue Trees - 8x8

There's something so wonderful about these trees, this is my second try at capturing them in paint.  I'm much happier with this attempt.  I approached it differently than I normally do, I started with what I can only call a "fuzzy" underpainting.  Sometimes I don't work with an underpainting at all, and other times it's completely necessary, and I can't really explain why...this is why I'm not a teacher :)

In the Morning - Carpinteria Bluffs Plein Air Oil Painting - 9x12

I confronted my fear the other day and set up outside to paint.  I enjoyed it SO much,  even though it was windy, and strangely cloudy (really high clouds that made the ocean brown!).  I love my plein air set up, I think I made a great choice, it was just as comfortable as painting in my studio.

I was nervous about what would happen when I brought the painting inside...would the colors be way off? would this panel carrier really work?

Well, it did look different once I got it inside, the colors were much more muted.  But the strange thing was as soon as it got even the tiniest bit of light it brightened right up again.  I've never seen one of my paintings do that before.

I also limited my palette a little more than I usually do, I thought it would help to unify the piece.

Bluff Trees - Landscape Oil Painting - 5x7

I spend a few hours this morning... ok 5 hours this morning...making changes to my blog. I'm slowing learning new things. If I had known years ago that I would be working with web stuff everyday I would have definitely taken some courses in that area!

Bluffs at Dawn II - California Landscape Oil Painting - 16x20

What a blessed month I'm having! Etsy sales are good, I've gotten great reviews from the show at Corktree, and yesterday I was accepted into the Santa Barbara Art Association! I got my feedback from the jurors and they only had good comments (not very helpful, but it also didn't kill my spirit, which is good). I love September :)

A Will To Grow - Landscape Oil Painting - 6x12

I found this interesting tree on the Carpinteria Bluffs one morning. This was also a strange angle to paint it from, but I really like how it turned out.

Busy busy day today, but it ends with homemade apple crisp :) yum!

California Sketch - Palette Knife Painting - 6x6

I did another one of these palette knife paintings today, I'm also working on a few other paintings...they'll be up soon. I'm not going to type much today, my wrist is killing me! and I have no idea why!

But if you need a laugh I recommend this post, I laughed so hard I cried and could hardly breath. Amazing.
