Carpinteria Baptist Church - 6x6

The final in my little nocturne series, and by far my favorite. Looking forward to the upcoming alumni invitational show at Westmont in a few weeks.

Streetlight - 6x6

The headlights and reflections off the vehicles is what drew me to paint this scene, had fun with that curb too.

December Nocturne - 6x12

Good news! Part of my show at Divine Inspiration Gallery will remain up until March 2012.  So those of you who didn't get a chance to see it still have time.   I will also be adding some new pieces to the show, hooray!

Palm Avenue - 5x7

The more I work on these night scenes the more I like them.  There will definitely be more of these in the future.

In other news, I'm opening my studio this week for all you last minute Christmas shoppers :) Just send me an email if you would like to stop by!

Night Palm - 5x7

It's really a challenge to photograph these night scenes without getting too much glare, I think I almost have it figured out.

Night Church - 5x7

I'm starting on a series of night scenes.  So far I'm really enjoying the change in color and mood, I think this is going to be a great exercise.

San Diego Night Scene - 6x6

I like painting night scenes every once in a while, I think I'll try to do more and hopefully get better at it.  The extreme lights and darks are surprisingly difficult to paint in one shot.

The Night Light - Daily Oil Painting - 6x6

I'm switching it up a little this monday morning, sometimes I forget that it's fun to paint night scenes. I really like how this one turned out, I wish I could have captured the actual colors used in the dark areas in this painting. I didn't use any black paint, so there's more interest in these areas than what the camera is showing :)

Winter Night II - Colorado Landscape Painting - 6x6

This is what I have learned to love about Denver, yesterday I wore short sleeves and sandals, even got a little sunburned at lunch time, and today I'm all bundled in my pea coat because it's 30 degrees with heavy blowing snow.

Because Colorado doesn't like to commit to seasons, it's fickle that way.

Praha II - Cityscape painting - 6x6

I'm back from what seemed like the longest painting break ever. Unfortunately there are some plans in the works that would mean an even longer break... they would also mean that I would get to paint full time... we'll see what happens. For today, another little painting of Prague at dusk.

Night Lights in Prague - Original oil painting

I'm working on some pieces that I'd like to put in a show that's coming up here in Denver. I'm preparing early so hopefully I won't chicken out. This is tentatively number one in the series, from a photo I took while I was in Prague a few years ago.

Winter Night - Daily Painting

There's a light buried in a tree on the corner of our street, and for some reason when night falls (and especially when it snows) it looks so beautiful.

November 4, 2009

I thought I would try my hand at another night scene. It's not my favorite one, but I did learn a few things that will help me next time.

I'm working on a series of paintings now that will all be painted pretty quickly. I want the brushstrokes to be very loose, and I want the colors to be more vibrant than they would be in real life. I also want to chose subjects that have extreme dark and light areas. I've learned that these are usually things that drawn me to a particular painting. It's also a fun way to paint.

Things have finally settled down after the wedding and moving to a new home. My new studio is all set up, and super cozy, the perfect place to paint.

This painting might be my favorite, and it's not very often that I'm satisfied with one of my own works
