Jelly Bowl Shoreline - 8x10 plein air

Here's this weeks plein air piece.  It might be the last one for a while, I'm getting a little too big to lug around all my painting gear!

Palm Trees in Fog - 8x10 Plein Air

I really liked this one.  It was one of those days that's really foggy but still warm because the sun is trying so hard to break through.  The beach was empty with the exception of a few surfers in the water.

Before the Tide - 8x10 Plein Air

Finished this piece just in time before the tide got me (but not before I got a sunburn!).  This was one of those paintings where I hated it the whole way through, until suddenly at the end I liked it.

February on the Bluffs - 8x10 Plein Air Painting

A bit of a unique situation of how this painting came to be, let's just say I felt a little more "watched" than normal,  and you'll be able to see photos of me painting it in the summer issue of Carpinteria Magazine :)

Plein Air at Goleta Beach - 8x10

Had to make an unexpected trip to Goleta one day, so I thought I'd at least make good use of it by making an extra stop and painting a new beach :)

View from Third Beach - 8x10 Plein Air Painting

I painted this the same morning as yesterdays painting.  I usually wouldn't paint a bright sunny scene without any shadows to play with, but I decided to have a go at it anyway.  My favorite part is the brushstrokes in the sand, and that deep teal color of the wave about to break.
And for some reason the camera didn't want to cooperate with me for this one, in person the sky is not that splotchy looking!

Early Morning Sun, Carpinteria Beach - 8x10

The best part about being at the beach so early in the morning is that no one is there! Everything is so peaceful, it's also when I see the most dolphins :) Painting into the light like this was a bit of a challenge though, I hate wearing hats, so my arm got a little tired shading my eyes.

Rain and Birds - 8x10 Oil Sketch

I wanted to go out and paint (because the clouds were amazing!), but I could tell they were going to open up and pour on me any second.  So I stayed in the studio and painted the view from my window.  The ocean was an amazing color, a teal shade, that made it look much more tropical than it actually is.

Plein Air Beach Fog - 8x10

I don't usually like to paint outdoors, but recently I've been venturing out more and more, just to get away from the sound of the freeway (and freeway construction!) that plagues my current studio.  Standing in the sand on an empty beach beats a noisy studio any day.  And I'm having fun getting loose with these plein air paintings, I have a vision of what I'm striving for them to look like (and it's nothing like my studio work!)
